PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Week 1: The haumana began their journey exploring two amazing Wahi Pana of our Wai'anae Community. Mount Ka'ala and Makua Valley are powerful places full of Mo'olelo and Mana because of their layers of history. We met the Kia'i that have taken on the Kuleana for these special places and learn more about the challenges that face our community in the future. We ended the week reflecting on our first week by learning the art of Lei Hala and the value of Ho'okupu from an amazing Kumu and cultural practitioner.
Week 2: The haumana continued their journey into community with a focus on understanding and defining value. They took a visit to MA'O Farms to learn about their work and met amazing young leaders from the Waianae Community who are not only growing food but also growing their future by attending College. They also took a trip to visit with three organizations tackling complex social issues that live in our community to understand value from their perspective. Finally, we wrapped up the week learning with our very own Ka Waihona Po'o about the art of Kakau.
Week 3: In week three we pushed into the ideas of entrepreneurism by introducing the haumana to kanaka who are connecting their passion for our culture and community to businesses that reflect those values. We also took a huaka'i to a locally run microfactory that is now learning to create and manufacture their own textiles. We wrapped up the week with Aunty Pua Burgess who took the students through thinking and writing exercises that will help them process the amazing journey they have been on for the past three weeks.
Week 4: In the fourth week we prepared to wrap up the experience and we believe that one of the best ways to do this is through art and artistic expression. We connected the haumana with Solomon Enos who is a prominent artist from Wai'anae and took them on a Huaka'i to visit community artwork at the POW WOW exhibit at The Bishop Museum.
