Papahana Puakahinano Fall Session

Program Details:

The intended outcome of the Papahana Puakahinano Fall Series is to build ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi skills and vocabulary, and cultural practitioners through ʻāina, wahi pana, and ʻike Hawaiʻi hands-on experiences. This will be achieved through a focus on the following two program objectives: 1) To provide meaningful ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and ʻike Hawaiʻi learning opportunities through ʻāina and wahi pana ecosystem based programming for haumāna and ohana in East Hawaiʻi; 2) To provide opportunities for haumāna engagement and launa in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi thorough Hawaiian culture based communities of practice.

 

Programs

The fall series will include five distinct week long learning programs, each program will accommodate up to 15 East Hawaiʻi Hawaiian Language and Culture Based School in grades K-12 from Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo, Nawahīkalaniopuʻu, and Ke Ana Laʻahana. The week (Friday) will culminate in a joint hōʻike where participating haumāna will demonstrate what they learned over the course of the week. Program activities and schedules are listed below.

 

Loko Iʻa, Keaukaha

Grades Served: Papa M-12

Max Participant: 15

Key Activities: Hands-on learning at Kaumaui and Waiuli in Keaukaha (makai) including mahiʻai, water quality, species identification, lawaiʻa, loko iʻa, makahā, interactions with various wahi pana, and mauka makai watershed systems, build ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi vocabulary specific to this practice.

Schedule: October 3-7 M-F, 8:00-3:00

Lead Kumu and Staff: Nahokū Kahana, Manoa Johanssen, Jojo Henderson

 

Malama Ka Wai Paukaʻa ʻĀina University

Grades Served: Papa M-12

Max Participant: 15

Key Activities: Hands-on learning at ʻĀina University in Paukaʻa including mahiʻai, interactions with various wahi pana, and mauka makai watershed systems, build ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi vocabulary specific to this practice.

Schedule: October 3-7, M-F, 8:00-3:00

Lead Kumu and Staff: Keith Lewis +2

 

Hana Noʻeau

Grades Served: Papa M-12

Max Participants: 15

Key Activities: Explorations in traditional Hawaiian dyeing, lauhala weaving, and lei making. Including the gathering of plants and materials. Build ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi skills specific to these practices.

Schedule: October 3-7 M-F, 8:00-3:00

Papa Holokai

Grades Served: Papa M-12

Max Participant: 15

Key Activities: Basic navigation and kilo building, Ocean and waʻa skills building, water safety, ocean and island science, moʻokuauhau of ʻohana waʻa, moʻolelo of of ʻohana waʻa, knot and line handling skills, build ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi vocabulary specific to this practice.

Schedule: October 3-7 M-F, 8:00-3:00

Papa Imu

Grades Served: Papa 7-12

Key Activities: Preparation of Imu
